One of the previous releases from Romeo models is the Captain of the Hussars –Reign of Napoli . This a fine example of how good can a Napoleonic figure be in 54mm scale . And i am emphasizing this cause its well known that Hussars uniforms are spectacular in detail and coloration and how difficult are to sculpt and to paint. NowAbout Sculpting Maurizio Bruno I pretty wellknown forhis masterpieces in both Pegaso and Romeo ranges. And this figure is no exception . Its simply amazing.
So this is one more review of a Romeo Kit figure, I have to remind once again to fellow readers that Italian Romeo is almost a “sister” company of also Italian Pegaso. That means that they “share “ great sculptors, casting quality ,and control for their products . They also produce different figures of course, but with great interest both . So I hope these figures that are reviewed from Romeo will introduce you to their nice range of Miniatures.
Back to the miniature, under scope , is RM 54 – 34 Hussar’s Officer –Kingdom of Naples 1815
CAPTAIN OF THE HUSSARS "GUARDS FOR INTERNAL SECURITY",
REIGN OF NAPOLI 1815 1820
The difficulty of maintaining law and order in the lively and densely populated City of Naples brought into being at the end of 1813 the “Guards for Internal Security". These guards were necessary in maintaining public order in a city that remained largely unguarded given the fact that its troops were often engaged in wars elsewhere.
The "Guards for Internal Security" were formed by volunteers from the high classes of society, nobles and bourgeois, who feared for the safety of their properties and material possession.
The fresh memories of the frightening violence suffered by the city during the 1799 “Revolution”, made the ruling classes fear the unrest and fury of the Neapolitan "working" classes, who were still unsubdued, hungry and prepared to rebel against the ruling classes.
With the passing of the decree on 11th March 1815, the Guards for Internal Security were expanded to include a cavalery unit comprising of two Companies.
The unit, although well equipped and uniformed in spectacular clothing was never engaged in any military campaigns but continued to maintain public order even after the fall of Gioacchino Murat until the end of 1820.
The figure, is represented with an interesting hairstyle combed in the style which was fashionable among Hussars a few years prior, a small detail which adds character to the figure as well as a "provincial" feeling to our Captain of the Hussars.
Historical Text is copied from Romeo Models website , after their allowance
A blue colored box with 2 white thick foam sheets , holds pretty safely all 15 ! white metal pieces of the figure and the base. The quality of the metal parts is really in very high standards, with smooth surface, and almost no cleaning need , than a pet with the fine steel wool to polish the figure.
Please take extreme care not to use a highspeedmotortool forpolishing with a steelbrush on it cause you will destroy all delicate details. You alsomust take care with the Hand polishing.
A single sheet of paper holds bilingual (English and Italian) historical text by Marco Giuliani (that I transferred here for your information) Research fromFransesco Simonsini and also a very detailed and accurate paint guide, piece by piece
Left arm -hand
Right arm – hand holding Shako
Sword in Scabbard
2 parts for Pelisse
Two (2) straps
Two (2) pieces for base representing lower part of stairs with protective hardware
Quality and Detail
The pose is pretty nice and almost setted up for picture taking !. Showing off the nice Uniform , with all silver decoratives , and so much detail , perfectly sculpted.
The accuracy of the representation is beyond any doubt, and this is one example figureof the nice dressing style of the era, though the Officer belongs to a non clearly Military Unit .
The hair style of him was almost a trade mark and at least very used of the Hussars. His face also has a nice look and moustache.
The Pelisse is a piece of Art on its own and also almost a hell to paint !
The Sculpture detail is Amazing , and that was expected since we talk of Maurizio Bruno . Very clean lines, extremely fine detail on all pieces. Nothing more , nothing less than you need to say that “This figure is really hot !”
Material - metal – is very good, the surface is pretty smooth and clean almost polished !
Just some fine steel wool touch will finish the preparation and also will enhance the already good stuff you get . Then some washing in bath with a mild detergent – water mix to make it as clean as it gets before priming.
Take also care to study the figure for the sequence of assembly , cause pieces are a lot and not the easiest figure to build !
This is definitely difficult figure to paint as most similar Napoleonic figures with this kind of detail . But here the big advantage is the clarity of details elements , that will helping brushes guidance .You have of course to achieve specific uniform colors that need proper shading and highlighting to really show it off.
Besides the silver lining, you also have to recreate fur and some leather parts. Face and hair will also demand some extra effort to have a nice finishing .This figure will need lots of patience and enough to get a nice result. Maurizio’s fine sculpting and the separation of pieces of the figure will help a lot .
Color combinations and choices are fixed and you get the iformation from the historical text of the information sheet , or go to some of the countless research sources for this era .
I would use the nice base provided to represent a clean cut Hussar as this Unit he belongs was not fighting, but something like police. So you don’t have to care for anything more than a nice painting of the base .
Conclusion – Final Verdict
One more nice figure from Italian Romeo Models , that brings the company closest to the top leading brands of figure making.
Very high quality of metal , casting, and Maurizio Bruno amazing sculpting signing. A difficult topaint figure but also a interesting theme from the Napoleonic Era .That’s a good pack for sure. You also have the Pegaso Quality guarantee in the so named release line of the Company !
